Wet Felting and Nuno Felting
Having journeyed through various means of artistic expression (jewelry design, surface design, glass fusing, and more), I am now exploring life as a fiber artist. My primary technique is felting: wet felting and nuno felting. I love this work! I am endlessly intrigued by the transformation of wool roving into beautiful objects, to wear, to look at, to live with, to treasure. The quality of felting that I love the most is that it is virtually impossible to make the exact same thing twice. It simply cannot be done.
Artist Statement
I am an art-based workshop leader, community educator, and founder and
former co-owner of Detroit Fiber Works, a fiber art studio in Detroit. At
Detroit Fiber Works, from 2013 through 2019, I provided opportunities for
Detroit artists to show and sell their work, some for the very first time.
My own fiber work has been shown at the Detroit Institute of Art, the
Scarab Club, Collected Detroit Gallery, Urban Institute for Contemporary Art,
and other galleries locally and nationally. With a focus on felting, my hands
are my tools, pulling and rolling wool fibers until they become works of art
that are decorative, functional and/or wearable. Currently, I am focused on
creating a co-op for artists of color in Detroit, and on making and showing
more of my own work.
I am intrigued by the transformation of wisps of wool into art that
reflects my personal experiences, my cultural heritage and current conditions
in our society.
Fiber is a language that speaks through touch and symbol. I come from a
long line of quilters. And while I am not a quilter, I feel pulled to this work
with fiber. I feel more connected to my ancestry when I am touching fiber and
transforming it into something beautiful. It’s what my grandmothers and my
great aunts did. I am compelled to do this work because I see the connection
between their quilts and my felt. They used fabric that would have become
“waste” to make art. I make art without creating any waste. When I felt, every
little piece of fiber is used. Nothing is cut away and discarded. I believe I’m
contributing to the betterment of the earth because I’m not disposing of
anything.
